Traditional Braces

Typically, when people think of orthodontics, they picture traditional braces: the ones that most people had as children. Metal brackets are bonded onto each tooth that needs alignment; the brackets are joined with wire that, when tightened over time, provides steady pressure on the teeth. Eventually, the teeth reach their new positions. Depending on the patient's situation, the wearing of a retainer may be required for some time after the braces come off. This kind of orthodontics has stood the test of time, because it is highly effective for a wide range of misalignments, and the effects are usually permanent.

Below are some of the situations in which Dr. Hoffmann may recommend traditional braces as the preferred orthodontic treatment for his Brookfield patients, rather than cosmetic dentistry procedures:

Cosmetic reasons: If you have crooked or misplaced teeth that are too severe for other treatments, such as porcelain veneers, braces might be the best solution. The benefits of braces are often more profound and long lasting than veneers and crowns.
Medical reasons: Sometimes a misaligned bite can affect the health of your mouth, by causing inappropriate grinding, wear, or jaw pain. Dr. Hoffmann may be able to fix many of these problems through the use of orthodontics.

Invisalign®
 
There are millions of American adults who want or need orthodontics, either because their families could not afford braces when they were children or because their teeth have grown out of alignment as they aged. Many adults are reluctant to get orthodontic treatment because they are concerned about the first impression that they may make on others and feel that braces are unsightly.

Invisalign®, different from traditional orthodontics, can, for the right candidate, alleviate the embarrassment of a metallic smile. Instead of brackets and wires, the Invisalign® system consists of a series of clear plastic aligners. Depending on how much correction is needed, Dr. Hoffmann may prescribe between 12 and 48 sets of aligners. Each aligner is slightly different, intended to slowly move your teeth towards their goal.

Under Dr. Hoffmann's periodic supervision, you will wear each aligner for about two weeks, removing it only to eat and drink. At the end of your treatment period (usually nine to 15 months), your teeth will be beautifully straight and no one will have to know that you had orthodontics treatment at all.
